Boitatá, the Avenger of the Forest

The Boitatá is a creature from Brazilian folklore traditionally identified as a fire snake, whose purpose is to protect the forests from those who engage in criminal fires. In the folklore, the Boitatá takes the form of a fire snake with many eyes, from which flames also emanate.

The Boitatá can also transform into a blazing log to kill men who promote the destruction of the forests. Its legend tells that it has many eyes because it consumed the pupils of many animals killed by wildfires. Each eye the snake devoured emitted a light. By devouring so many eyes, the snake's own eyes became true balls of fire, and its entire body emitted light.
